About The Original Buffalo Dale

Nine years ago I started writing a column for The Stephens Media Group which reported on local fund raising events. Two years later I was on a business trip to New Haven, CT when a friend suggested that I broaden the scope of my column to include information about my travels and my interests in life. As a result   “Around Town with the Original Buffalo Dale” became “Down the Road with the Original Buffalo Dale”.

I grew up in northeastern Oklahoma and was a teenager when multi millionaire rancher E.C. Mullendore was murdered in his home. Forty three years later the murder is still unsolved.  In June 2006 when I heard that Chub Anderson, who was with E.C. the night he was killed, had been arrested I decided it would be interesting to cover his pre-arraignment hearing at the court house in Independence, KS. After a fluke introduction to Mr. Anderson in the judge’s chambers during his sentencing I began visiting him on a weekly basis in Lansing State Prison forming a bond that has strengthened up until his death in 2010.

Today Anderson is buried in Kansas. Up until his death, he continued to fight extradition to Oklahoma where there were still outstanding warrants for his arrest. I saw him regularly and our conversations involved not only the details of his colorful past but also include our experiences working together during this last part of his life. In the course of researching his story, I have traveled to Montana, made dozens of visits to Lansing State Prison, examined the courthouse records in four different states and recorded hundreds of hours of personal interviews with Anderson and those who knew him in his heyday. I had no idea that a chance meeting in the judge’s chambers that day would lead to a eight year relationship with him, a book about his life and a multi county Grand Jury subpoena for me, but I believe in the power this story has to intrigue readers around the world.

This blog recounts my adventures as I pursued the truth about E.C. Mullendore’s murder and the life of Chub Anderson. I also post excerpts from my book Footprints in the Dew with photos and video clips, my weekly articles and links to my favorite travel spots and attractions. I hope you enjoy riding along with me.

  1. Grew up in Dewey, OK and knew “Chub” thru friends as that part of Oklahoma was a small place due to athletics etc.

  2. I have a friend who’s father worked on the Mullendore ranch at the time of the murder. She was a small child at the time. I read the book written about the murder twice. Iwould love to read your book when it comes out. Maybe you could give me a heads when it is released. Thanks, Connie Nelson, Pauls Valley, Ok.
