My uncle, Bill Delozier who lived in Chautauqua, Kansas, related this story before his death. A local rancher told him that E. C.’s father told him that “he would have killed E. C. himself if he were not blind.”

    • Ray: Just wanted to let you know that my book is finished and I have started a campaign on kickstarter to fund an initial printing. You can find all the details on the home page of my website., Thanks, Dale

    • Hi Mike: In case you are not already aware of it, I have started a kickstarter campaign to fund an independent publication of my book Footsteps in the Dew.
The details are on the home page of my website, thanks. Dale

  2. After retiring in California and moving back to Oklahoma after 40 years, I have become an avid Oklahoma History buff, and was just recently introduced to the Mullendore family history. After reading the book and talking to some friends from the Copan area, I have become extremely interested in this story. I can’t wait until you can publish your book, and more truths can finally be known about E.C.. I would like to be included in the loop of this story, and would be extremely interested to assist you in researching any additional information, if need be.

    • Gerald: Thanks for your interest- keep checking the site for new information and please stay in touch- Buffalo Dale

  3. Hey Dale! It’s Andrea, we met at the auction on Saturday. Please let me know if I can do anything to help! This story is so fascinating to me, I will do anything I can do to help! Keep in touch.

  4. Dale,
Just returned home from the old hometown. My sister had saved the local newspaper article about your book for me to read. Very interesting. Keep up the good work and best of luck to you getting published. As always, your friend and fan!

  5. Dale,

I have been following you for a long time. The whole Chub Anderson thing is interesting to me. I am a retired college prof. History was my main focus. When the book comes out, let me know. I believe “Footsteps in the Dew” if I remember right. Hook up on Facebook. I’m living in Florida but get back to Oklahoma quite a bit. JJ

  6. Dale, I’m interested in your story. I was around when the murder occured. I remember one or two items a little differently. For instance, the rumor was that Arnorld Moore was called before the Osage County Sherrif. That is why E.C. was taken to Arnorld Moore’s rather than the hospital and it was the Funeral Home that started cleaning him. But, I could be wrong. I’m sure there are many speculations.
Never the less, keep up the good work.

  7. Thanks, be sure and let us know when the book is published. Enjoy history; especially in Oklahoma and close to where we lived. Lived in Shidler and graduated there in 1949; so, know a lot about the Mullendores.

    • Hi Doralee: Just wanted to let you know that my book is finished and I have started a kickstarter campaign to fund an initial printing. You can find all the details on the home page of my website. Thanks, Dale

  8. Dale:
My wife(Pat) and I, along with our friends, Tony and Becky Bascone, enjoyed meeting you last week at the Summit Club. Sorry that your team lost that night. Our meeting sparked a lively discussion about the E.C. case. Our friends moved here from Dallas and were not familiar with the case, so a detailed discussion was experienced. My wife and I happen to have the original Mullendore Murder book and loaned it to our friends to read. We are most interested in your book and look forward to reading it as soon as possible.

    • Hi Stan: Just wanted to let you know that my book is finished and I have started a kickstarter campaign to fund an initial printing. You can find all the details on the home page of my website. Thanks, Dale

  9. Dale, Please do keep us posted on your book. I am really looking forward to reading the end of the story. I also like the title you picked for the book. You would be an interesting person to talk to considering the fact that Chub can be so open with you. Best of luck on speeding this thing up!

  10. I’m glad to finally see some of this info coming out, everyone has been waiting for the book that was said to be in the works.I knew Chub when he lived in Caney in late 1971 nd 1972.I for one will be very surprised if this actual story comes out before Chub dies.It does seem bad that in the state that his health is in that he can’t be left in piece to live out what life he has left. Yes,Chub probably is the only one who knows what actually happened that night, except for the person or persons who commited the crime,if Chub didn’t.I still will be surprised if Chub doesn’t take this to the grave like he has said he would,I guess only time will tell….Take care Chub

    • Hi Kathy: Just wanted to let you know that my book is finished and I have started a kickstarter campaign to fund an initial printing. You can find all the details on the home page of my website. Thanks, Dale

  11. Wonderful website. So glad to see that you are getting this story out. Can’t wait to follow every step as you move forward. At last someone to present well documented and researched facts. Keep it up, Dale.

  12. Dale and I have been friends many years, starting in the sixties. The backyards of our houses joined and we had many good times. I never imagined that Dale would be an author and write a weekly column. As most people who live here I am still curious about the murder. I look forward to getting a copy of the book to see what it is all about. Keep up the good work Dale, great web site, now do I get a free copy of the book.

  13. Dale, This short film clip with Chub and the ex sherriff Wayman really whets the appetite for more of this facinating story. I remember when this happened and can hardly wait for the next episode.

    • Hi Bill: Just wanted to let you know that my book is finished and I have started a kickstarter campaign to fund an initial printing. You can find all the details on the home page of my website. Thanks, Dale

  14. thanks for homework on this story. I have some friends that were deeply embedded with the ranch and the family and they all have their own stories. It’s a fascinating story that I keep looking for more information about. Looking forward to more.

    • Hi Harvey: Just wanted to let you know that my book is finished and I have started a kickstarter campaign to fund an initial printing. You can find all the details on the home page of my website. Thanks, Dale

  15. My brother, John and I went to school at Copan with the Anderson boys. I also worked for a bank in Sedan, Kansas….E. C. on occasion would come in and do business. Because I grew up in Copan area, and went to school with Chub and his brother. I have been very interested in this mystery. I also own a hardback copy of “The Mullendore Murder Case” and look forward to owning a copy of “Footsteps In The Dew”

    • Hi Jane: Just wanted to let you know that my book is finished and I have started a kickstarter campaign to fund an initial printing. You can find all the details on the home page of my website. Thanks, Dale

  16. I worked for, and loved Mrs. Mullendore and her family for several years. I hope when your book comes out it will give Katsy and her family closure and peace of mind.

  17. enjoy your articles. I have been interested in this since it all happened, guess because it is close to home. Keep up the good work. I own the “The Mullendore Murder Case” and look forward to reading “Footsteps In The Dew”.

  18. Hello Dale, its Michelle (i coached your daughter in upward) I am just amazed with your website. I will continue to follow your work.

  19. FYI
A few years back I had occasion to work w a woman who claimed to be related to the Mullendore familia. (I grew up in Caney, KS…so am familiar with what you are telling!) She told me that the Sheriff that made the investigation of the Mullendore murder was a cousin also. He protected all info that was put out by anybody that wasn’t in the immediate family. Now…this was hearsay, but thought perhaps you might find this bit of info important.
I was also informed that folks involved with the mortuary were somehow related also. When my daughter attended junior college in Coffeyville, several of her friends from Caney/Copan area seemed to know an awful lot about what had really happened. There was one young man, as I recalled, that swore to us, that EC was NOT DEAD, but was the “Cat man” that was referred to, that roamed the ranch acres at night! (Have you perhaps heard this rumor?)
The butler ask Mrs. Mullendore about “the cat man” and she would only smile real big, like she was keeping a secret. (According to the young man telling this.) This young man was a good friend of Katsy’s daughter, and had attended the granddaughter’s wedding, which was held at the ranch. (My point in telling you this, was to prove he had access to some of the family stories.)
Just thought I would share this story with you. Sometimes, I’ve found, in working with young people, they are more savvy than the ‘smartest’ adult in the crowd. Good luck, and we’ll be buying your book. ciao

  20. I’m very interested in the story, having grown up in the Copan/Bowring area and visiting relatives throughout the years. My parents retired to Copan and my mother was acquainted with Mrs. Mullendore through church activities.

  21. Hi, Would you please let me know when your book comes out? My daughter &
granddaughter live in Caney, Kansas, & we are all REALLY looking forward to reading
    it! Thanks so much,
    Dian Darity

  22. Chub, sorry about your health.
Dont you know EC is smiling and saying I am still in the lime light after 40 years.
    Take care.

    Carmaletta

  23. Damon,is my best friend, although I knew him by another name(Jack)I spent more hours with him than anybody else,in the mountains of Montana and can say he didnt do what people are claiming,I can guarantee that, for various reasons. It kills me to see my old friend in the condition he is,but I sit here with my eyes closed with your video playing, and that voice hasnt changed,I miss him,and have a lot of fond memories of one of the greatest men to ever have lived. Please tell him hello from me

  24. Please keep in contact with me,about Damon.I spent many years with him in Montana, and care for him deeply. Thanks Cody Stemler

  25. God speed old boy! You’ve lived a hard life and deserve your eternal rest.It was nice to have known you,and to be your neiaghbor on 3rd street in Caney.Your free now, kick up them heels and dance your way on to the great beyond.I for one hope you didn’t tell Dale or anyone else anything…..Let them wonder, give them somthing to do in their old age. God Bless my Friend, and heart felt thoughts to the family.

  26. Dear David, You and the family have my thoughts and prayers in this trying time. Please know that whatever services the family may have (probably pretty private,if that is possible)that my heart and soul will be with you,and you will be in my heart all day…..Avery old friend!! Kathy

  27. I was awaken by a text after falling asleep last night….Chub has died. My very next thought was of Footprints In The Dew. I will be anxiously watching for it.

  28. I am greatly interested in the fact that you are very probably writing a book from your visits with Chub, as I was 2 years younger than Chub and went to school at Copan. Was in the same grade as Wanda Brown, Chub’s first wife. Knew the Anderson’s and was friends with Chub and his brothers. Moved to Oregon in 1957 but have kept up with going’s on in NE Oklahoma.
I am interested in the publishing of any material about the Mullendore Murder Case.
Thanks and looking forward to hearing more. Jay Greenwood

  29. Now maybe your book can be released. I am looking forward to reading that one. Sorry some people think your interest was just monatery I know it was more than that. I do believe Chub was your friend. I hope that he did tell you what happened and closure will be possible for a lot of people ,including Sheriff Wayman. That man has waited a long time. Really enjoyed watching the interview with Wayman & Chub,,,,,thanks for that film clip Dale.

  30. I am sorry to hear that Chub has passed away, he was in my class at Copan. I knew him and I knew his family. A very good family.
My sympathy goes out to Dewayne and David and Chub’s son and daughter.

  31. I Remember when this happened I was 16 and had been training to be a Jockey by Leroy Miller the Jockey at the All American at that fell and EC was worried about. I guess what I remember most is how it upset my Dad Wade Navarre who had been
Training the Cross Bell Horses. How ironic is this I am working in Oklahoma at this time and Friday went to the Cross Bell . I Had alway heard about the ranch
from my Dad . I was told after arriving it wasn’t a good time to visit . Finding out that
Chub Anderson had reciently died . I think more will surface on this case. Hope to get a chance to visit with you Dale. Keith

  32. I remembered a funny story about Chub and his frien Kent,They hunted racoon when they wern”t rodeo. I ask them what they did with the meat and they said they gave it to the dogs.I told them that my Grandma would shot them for the meat,to let me know when the got a good batch and I’d come out and get them. They thought it would be funny if they didn’t dress them out( there were 13 of them) little did they know I’d been cleaning wild game since I was about 10 years old.So I hung them up ,skinned, gutted, and washed them off, said thanks and headed to Grandma’s,we finished cleaning them put them on to cook, the guys changed their minds after eating that BBQ racoon…LOL

  33. Thank you Dale for posting the latest film clip. I did not think it was disrespectful of you. I am so glad you have all these wonderful tapes & recordings ,written info. etc. From what I have watched so far, you always ask Chub if it is alright to ask a question giving him the final say.

  34. It’s Becca from Osage Federal! I’m sorry to hear your friend Chub has passed away. I’m excited to someday read your book, I would like to know what happened. I always look forward to waiting on you, I love to hear what you have to say! Let me know if you ever need any help with anything! Becca

  35. dale

keep up the good work never mind the bad comments that is the job of a writer.i have watched all 4 of the tapes and have not seen anywhere you have disrespect chub or the sheriff. sometimes you go into something and then it becomes personal good luck !!

  36. I enjoy your articles very much! I went to school with Chub Anderson and was very fond of him, he was from a wonderful family.

  37. I, like so many others, read the Mullendore book many years ago. I was sorry to hear about Chub dying. I hope you will let us know if he told you what really happened that night. Will you just let us know and also about the book you have talked about Footprints in the Dew. Can you let us know if we will ever know?

  38. Thanks for all the great stories Cody, I wish I had room to post them all. Hope to someday meet you and I will
let you know what I find out about that tape.

  39. When will your book “footprints in the dew be available for purchase and where will I be able to buy it? I’ve been reading everything about this story and I must say I’m addicted to learning more about that night. Thanks from Neodesha, KS

  40. Dale at least talk to Michelle Martin and think about doing a documentary until you get your book published. You probably know several people in the business who can help you get this story out, other than just this website. I am looking forward to your last film clip. I still think time is of the essence , even though Chub has died.

  41. As I stated in an earlier post….my brother and I went to school with the Anderson boys. I am the same age as Chub. I still work, actually 2 jobs. I am a County Health Nurse of nearly 32 years and I also work at a Nursing Home. I often wished I knew what Nursing Home Chub was a resident……….so I could go see him and perhaps get him to sign my book….”The Mullendore Murder Case.” I live just 40 miles west of Independence, KS.

I am looking forward to owning a copy of “Footsteps In The Dew”……….I was thinking I read you didn’t have a publisher to publish your book. You would think every publisher that is familar with the murder would jump at the chance to publish your book. Anxious to read your book.

I also thought Bill Kurtis would have something on COLD CASE FILES.

  42. Keith Navarre had an interesing comment. Dale it would be worth you time to visit more with him. I wonder what Keith’s dads thoughts were on who might have killed EC, if any.

  43. Hi Buffalo Dale, I’m 83 years old and not very computer literate, so I don’t know what you mean by what website. I hope this gets through. Anyhow I am completely fascinated with what you have written so far. This story has been a mind=grabber for many, many years and there are tons of people out here that will get your book as soon as it is out. So far it is great and I can hardly wait until the book is published.
    Thank you, thank you. Betty

  44. Great interview with Dale Kuhrt. You do have a wealth of information . I am so glad you recorded those & kept such good records. Looks like it is headed in one direction so far? I hope you can tie up all the loose ends & show us who the real killer was.

  45. I can’t wait for the book! I will be purchasing the book as soon as it comes it! Very sorry to hear of Chub’s passing.

  46. I worked as a LEO in Osage County from 1974 to 1981 for PPD and Osage County and worked a couple of cases that might of concerned Chub.
    Thanks,
    Randy

  47. Humorous, or not…….I have heard the following comment many times about Kent Green: “They help a non-open casket ceremony at Kent Green’s funeral. The reason being……………….he was NOT in the casket!”

Take it for what it’s worth!
    hb

  48. Randy, Can you tell us who you think the killer might have been. I wish Dale’s book would be in print soon for all of us who want to see this mystery come to an end. Justice for EC is the bottom line. He does deserve that!

  49. Now,has anyone thought about who had more of a criminal past than Chub Anderson??????Kent Green was always looked at because of all his crimes, but everyone went back to the ,bodyguard, Maybe because Kent Green was an ugly SOB and wouldn’t make good headlines.

  50. Well done. I am enjoying the information you’ve been sharing on the murder case. I did see a couple of mistakes in the text forward of the interview. Spelling of names Adcock and Kurht and the family sent their livestock and belongings in a boxcar, they, themselves, did not ride in same. No big deal, they just sound like hobo’s. Lord know we don’t need any help looking country!
Thanks again for your tireless efforts to solve this mystery. Cynthia

  51. Kurtis wanted Chub to confess to the EC Mullendore murder. Or he would not do a feature on it. Looks to me like Kurtis missed a chance to hype the murder and do follow up shows.

    ole Don

  52. Sept 20, 1970 Chub and E C were at the races in Caney, Kansas. E C was backing Chub’s brother on the race car. E C was drinking on 4th Street, then he left and after that he outrun the police on the County Line Hill…….. Did anyone ever consider tracing the rest of his steps that night after E C was killed, like does anyone one know anything about what happened on Number 8 Bridge. Obviously theres a lot more to this story than what you are getting in all your interviews. It appears no one really wants to know the truth.

  53. Dale, Have you ever been to Clayton, New Mexico to the historic Eckland Hotel. I am not sure if it is open at this time but it has a colorful past dating back to the 1890s. You are not far from there if you are in Cimmaron. Angel Fire, Eagle Nest & Red River are all fun places to visit.

  54. Dale, I’m glad to see this new instalment in the Chub Anderson story and the interview with Mike’s Wife. It says that you are working on the final chapter of “FOOTPRINTS IN THE DEW”,which I’m sure everyone is glad to think of this story finally being written. Do you have any idea when the book will be in the bookstores??I know that you have worked hard on this book, and I’ve given you a hard time about some of the things that you have written about Chub.SORRY!!But it is hard for people who knew Chub to believe that Chub could have done this. In the time I knew Chub,I can’t even remember him getting angry with anyone about anything….I still have my doubts that you have the whole story, but I will reserve judgement until I have read your finished book..Hope we don’t have to wait much longer..I think that a lot of people will feel as I do,we will have to here the confession on one of your tapes in Chub’s own words,I don’t know that just it being written in your book that that is what he said will convince some of us. Hope to see the finished book soon!!!!!!!

  55. I have searched your site for the answer, but I can’t find it and was wondering if I am remembering correctly. I could have swore that I read somewhere on your site that Chub wrote in “code” in the Mulledore book to his children who was responsible for E.C.’s murder. Am I correct, or did I read this somewhere else?
    Thanking you in advance.

    • Archie: If you look in the photos portion of the blog under Chub and click on the photo of the Mullendore book the caption reads that Chub always claimed that he had made notes in his copy of the book in code that pointed to the murderer.

  56. Hope the book , movie , documentary,,,,,,,,,whatever will come out soon. Lot’s of red tape getting things done. Maybe the hard part is over. Many of us are anxiously waiting to read the rest of this story!

  57. Congratulations and best of luck finding a publisher. I am looking forward to reading your book…I know it will get published!

  58. I was On the Ponca city police dept. when mullendore was killed I know sheriff Wayman quite well and other officers who work on that case. If you have wrote a book Chub I would like to buy a copy. sincerely Roy Tidwell

  59. Just proves how good he is with a gun. To bad he did not shoot that well the night EC died. Missed his targets?
    Dale you writing is excellent.

  60. I am wondering why he had to give his finger prints to Social Security? I am on disability and never have had to.

  61. Excited to see your latest photos at the awards. I have enjoyed following along on your journey. Good luck and I hope some of those”rich and famous” are going to back you. By the way did Tom Selleck attend?

  62. Dale,
I have been following the film clips and the weekly articles you have been posting recently. They have provided a wealth of information. I first read the Mullendore Murder book many years back and have re-read it 3-4 times since. I am looking foward to the “Footprints in the Dew”. Keep up the good work.

  63. Just came across your website after uncovering an old article on Leroy Kerwin. I worked for Cohen, Kerwin & White (we never knew who “White” was) at the time of the Mullendore and Kerwin murders. I met EC and later, his widow with her attorney, when they visited our Atlanta office. Would love to make any contribution I can to furthering this story – what a set of characters and circumstances!

  64. Susan any thoughts as to who you think might have shot EC? I am so glad you found this website. I hope you & Buffalo can get together and share views on this unsolved crime. Looking forward to the day Oklahoma can close the books on this one as solved.

  65. Dale, I enjoyed reading about the Clutter family that were killed in Holcolm,Ks. My Mother’s Uncle was in the KBI at the time and worked on the case,in what way I don’t know but it was always talked about in the family. We were also told that a family member helped to bury the Dalton, this too I can’t verify, but that was the story….As much as I enjoy reading about the Clutter family……….WHERE IS FOOTPRINTS IN THE DEW that we have been waiting for???? In my mind, knowing Chub,I still believe that he took this info to the grave like he always said that he would…Make me a believer and get the book, FOOTPRINTS IN THE DEW, in print, even though I will still be a hard one to convert…

  66. You mentioned you worked on the ranch , when you were younger . Did you
work with a fellow named Jack Clark , he was related to Hamp Scudder , the
old cowboy with the wooden leg if my memory serves me correctly . Jack W.
Clark and Ben Fowler were Phillips employees and shared a relation to
Will Rogers , along with Hamp Scudder . Pat’s Scudders wife , Dorothy, also worked at Phillips . I am enjoying your writings about the murder as we lived in Caney
from 1950,s until 1983 when Phillips sent me to Denver .

  67. How long before FOOTPRINTS IN THE DEW will be published. Seen where Dale Kuhrt has passed. My father-in-law and Dale were good friends.

  68. Comment on message from Charles Burris..Jack Clark was Jennie Scudder’s nephew.
Hamp Scudder DID NOT have a wooden leg! Jack Clark, Ben Fowler and Hamp Scudder were not related to Will Rogers. Hamp had a friendship with Will Rogers. Jack Clark and Ben’s wife were related. Good Luck on your writings…..
    Granddaughter of Hamp Scudder

  69. It was good to meet you. We’re looking forward to the book and the movie! Please keep in touch and let me know how things are going.
    Twila

    • Bob: I appreciate your interest- all the details are in the book and I’m working hard to get it published- Dale

  70. Very interesting writing ( your newspaper column). I read every one and have told others to make sure they read it also.. I’m looking forward to the book ! When will the 101 Ranch exhibit be available in Tulsa? This is immensly interesting to me.

  71. You haven’t published anything lately as far as getting “Footsteps In The Dew” published…….or if a movie is in the making. What’s Up?

  72. Dale

A week ago today there was a show on TV where Gary Glanz was interviewed. He reported that Chub told him two weeks prior to his death that E.C and Chub had a vicous fight from which Chub could not know E.C. unconscious for fear of looking over his shoulder for the remainder of his life. Chub admitte in the interview with Gary that he shot E.C. an then had an unknown thrd party shoot him so to cover up the actual events. How does this affect your efforts? Were you aware of this TV show ?

  73. Dear Buffalo Dale, the original,
I will be eternally grateful to you for inviting me to “tag along” with you to the Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Museum this last Friday and Saturday. I would be hard pressed to remember when I had had a better time! Meeting Patrick Wayne and my favorite actor of all time, Wes Studi, was a thrilled that is difficult to describe. The sheer number of introductions to the rich and famous was mind boggling. Food and entertainment was excellent. Perhaps the best thing that happened, besides meeting all the beautiful women, was the change to jaw with you and start an ongoing friendship.
    So here’s to you Pilgrim!
    Clarance Benes, aka, Rooster Cogburn

  74. Dale,
I just recognized your picture. You may not remember me but we’ve worked many Delaware Tribal elections together. I was so excited to see that you have this website now. It’s been a long time, but I always enjoyed our visits. Take care my friend and I look forward to more reading.

    Nicky
